plate tectonics and volcanoes lesson

by:ER Bottle     2020-01-15
This is the fourth part of the 6-part hand.
Unit study on Earth science
Make edible volcanoes, build an erupting Ring of Fire, display plate construction using Graham cookies, use play-doh, and more!
My course is for 2nd-
Children of grade 3rd and their siblings.
These are the classes I created to work with weekly family Schoolsop.
We meet 2 1/2 hours a week with 14 children under the age of 012.
Use these fun lessons with your classroom, family, after-school lessons, camp or collaborationop!
Introduction and board teticonics1. Stretch & pray.
12: 18-reading and discussing Hebrew books29. 2.
A quick review of the destruction of the Earth by floods. 3.
Introduction to plate structure theory:.
From the course of the first week, let the children sing how God brings the Earth together to review all levels of the Earth. b.
Tell the children that a theory is an educated guess of something.
Geologists have some ideas about the Earth that they are not 100% sure, but they are very sure about the Earth.
They call these theories(
Let the children say \"theory \". âx80x9d)c.
These layers of the Earth are not always static.
According to the theory of water structure (
Let the children say the theory of water structure. âx80x9d)
When the water burst from the depths of the Earth during the noah flood s flood, the Earth\'s crust cracked like you solved a puzzle. [
Demonstrate by separating the pieces of the puzzle. ]
Debris from the Earth\'s crust will still move a little bit.
Geologists refer to these puzzle pieces as tectonic plates. d.
According to plate theory (
Let the children say, plate structure theory
The Earth\'s shell is divided into moving plates.
The movement caused the movement of the mainland, the eruption of volcanoes, and the spread of the sea.
Teacher/mom 1: you need: the lyrics of the first week class and the construction of the puzzle plate fault line 4. (
Preparation: in class-co-
The Op starts by putting a napkin, Clementine and 4 toothpicks on each seat. )
Let the children wash their hands.
Distribute a Clementine to each child and let them peel it and peel it together as much as possible.
Let them flatten the peel and then try to put it back on the Clementine and fix it with a toothpick.
After the flood, the shape of the Earth is different.
It also has a fault line, such as a crack on the Clements skin. As the land (
Represented by Peel)
Together, the volcano erupted and the earthquake.
Eat citrus.
Teacher/mom 2: you need: hand sanitizer or wet wipes, 1 Clement or Orange per child (
Must be easy to peel)
, One napkin per child, 4 toothpicks per child * extra hands if you want-
For activities on plate structures and fault lines, please visit http :.
Plate boundary.
Take a few puzzles that don\'t go together and move them as described below:
Because of the flood, the Earth is now broken down into pieces like these puzzles.
What do we call these things? (plates)b.
The fault or fault line is a crack on the surface of the Earth, and the two plates gather together. [
Raise two puzzles next to each other and let the children say \"fault \". âx80x9d]
We will lift our two hands and pretend they are two of the Earth\'s tectonic plates. [
Let the children raise their two hands and hold them parallel to the floor.
Then point to the area between the hands of one of the children. ]
What is the area where these two plates meet? (fault)c.
In fact, the Earth\'s plate is moving.
They move in three main ways: I.
A divergent boundary is a fault that separates the two plates. [
Let the children say that they are distracted when they have their hands separated. ]ii.
The convergence boundary is a fault jointly promoted by the two plates.
Let the children say \"dialogue\" when holding hands together \". ]iii.
Sometimes on a convergence boundary, one plate is under the other.
Geologists call it a dive. [
Let the child say, \"give in\" while pushing one hand in part under the other \". ]
Similarly, diving is one of the three plate boundaries.
This is what happens at the convergence boundary. iv.
The transformation boundary is a fault that two plates rub in the opposite direction. [
Let the child say \"convert\" when the two hands rub together, one side of the index finger to the other side of the index finger. ]v.
Repeat the action of the hand 3 times, let the child say the boundary name in each action.
Teacher/Mother 3: you need: 2 pieces of puzzle (used above)6.
Display different plate movements using double Oreo cookies. a.
Give each child a double.
Oreo cookies and napkins. b.
The Earth\'s crust or crust is called the Earth\'s crust.
Let the children say \"crust \".
In Greece, Rock means hard rock.
The plate, composed of the crust and the upper crust, is located on a warmer, softer crust called a soft circulation circle.
Let the children say \"soft circle \".
The cookies above will represent the crust, the white filling will be a soft circulation circle, and the cookies below will be the lower sleeve.
There are three basic ways of plate movement. c.
Carefully take it apart by twisting the cookies above.
Slide the cookies above onto the white filling.
What you see is that a hard lithosphere layer plate moves on a softer soft loop. d.
Earthquake: Break the cookies in half.
Listen to the sound it makes when you do.
What does that sound mean? An earthquake!
There will be no earthquake in the soft flow circle.
They occur in the fragile crust.
Half of these cookies will represent where the two plates of our earth meet.
Let\'s determine how they move and what happens when they move. e.
Divergence plate boundary :(
Let the child say, different. âx80x9d)
Press the two broken cookies for half a block and slide them apart.
What about the cream stuffing?
What happens when cookies push each other?
Just as the filling in the middle rises when the cookies move, the New Earth (or magma)
When the plates are separated, the plates rise between them.
The cream filling between the two broken streamers may flow up, similar to the rise, decompression and partial melting of the intermediate hot streamers
The Atlantic Ridge and the continental rift belt near and below Iceland. f.
Convergence plate boundary :(
Let the child say, convergence. âx80x9d)
Push a cookie under another one.
What happens to the filler when the plates slide together?
The cold, fragile crust extends deep into the earth and deep earthquakes occur.
Just as the ends of one of the cookies rise as they get together, when the plates are pushed together on a converging boundary, the mountains are pushed up.
The biggest earthquake occurred in the push belt where the two plates were glued together, and then suddenly let go like the Oregon coast.
Where the ocean plate meets the land plate, the submarine zone is often found. g.
Transform the boundary of the board :(
Let the child say change. âx80x9d)
Slide the two cookie blocks across the other and over the cream filling.
What do you notice on the edge of the cookie?
Just as the cookies slide each other and create a lot of friction, the plates that rub together in the same way are very disruptive.
You can feel and hear that the slide between the \"platforms\" is not smooth, but stick to it, then let go, stick to it, and then let go.
Every time you hear a burst sound like an earthquake at the San Andreas fault in California. h.
Let\'s name these three movements again: divergence, convergence, and transformation. i.
Hot spots: some of the Earth\'s landscapes are hot spots (
Let the children say \"hot spots \")
There, a plate rides on a fixed Plumb of a hot cloak, forming a series of volcanoes.
Imagine if a hot, glowing piece of coal is embedded in a creamy filling, a series of volcanoes are burned into the most important cookies.
We will learn about volcanoes in a little bit of time. j.
Children are allowed to eat biscuits.
Teacher/Mother 3: you need: 1 pair
Oreo cookies (MUST be double-stuffed)
Each child plus something extra & 1 napkin per child how does God make the earth come together
Sing the new verse of how God put the Earth together: \"I am a small teapot \"(
The bill of marking. )
Earth is a jigsaw puzzle made up of 13 plates that move slowly when they meet their partner. (
The hands are parallel to the floor and rub slowly. )
Some collide, some slide, some let the lava through (
For \"bump\", slap both hands together, for \"slide\", slide both hands back and forth, and for \"let lava pass\", swing your fingers)
Because they float under me and you. (
When you point to yourself and the person standing in front of you, wave back and forth slowly. )
Before Noah\'s flood, the mainland was one (
Raise a finger)
Their actions have never been completed due to sin (
Shake your head sadly)
Slow movement of seven continents (
Swing slowly and lift 7 Fingers)
On a circular plate forming the ground. (
Point to the ground and jump like the \"ground\" you said. \")
Teacher/Mom 4: you need: words for this song written in large letters (
The song is based on O\'Brien\'s work.
Palmer from rock and rock: a science song to sing. )
The continent moves to the Pacific. (
(If not limited by time)
Show how gravity is trying to pull the continent back to the Pacific Ocean and how the crust under the Pacific Ocean is obviously thinning, not the Atlantic Ocean;
So Magma (melted rock)
Penetrate outward more frequently than elsewhere.
Put some apple sauce in the snack to do thisSize of Ziploc package.
Push through the middle (
Like a flood erupting from the depths of the Earth).
Please note how thin is in the middle, everything is settling into that area.
The crust below the Pacific Ocean is much thinner than the crust below the Atlantic Ocean, so magma is more likely to seep out of these cracks.
The continent moves slowly toward the Pacific, just as Apple sauce moves slowly toward the weak points in the middle.
Teacher/Mom 4: you need: Globe and apple sauce in dim sum
Size Ziploc package for each child
Read the book volcano: VolcanoBranley. (
During Noah\'s flood 5,000 years ago, the \"millions of years\" was changed to \"millions of years \". \")
Edible volcano.
Edible volcano :[
Preparation: when the children listen to the book in activity 9, cut the parchment paper or aluminum foil into about 7 feet x7 paper with scissors.
Put a sheet of paper/foil on the table for each child.
Write the child\'s name on parchment/foil using the sharpie marker.
Put a cookie, a spoon, about 2 teaspoons on each piece of paper.
Chopped cornflakes and about two tablespoons of taco meat. ]a.
Show the children how to divide the dough into two thinner circles.
Each one will be a volcano. b.
They place a spoonful of tortillas on a volcano with a spoon and sprinkle them with crushed cornflakes.
They will then squeeze the outer rim up into a cone-shaped volcano. c.
Use extra cookies to make extra volcanoes for teachers/moms. d.
Place them on a baking tray and bake for 12 minutes at 375.
Teacher/Mother 2: you need :(20 children)3 pkg. (8oz)
Crispy biscuits (must be Grands)
, 1 cup of crushed corn flakes, 17 spoons, parchment paper or aluminum foil, scissors, sharpie marks, 2 baking machine/Mom 3: you need :(20 children)
2 baking pans, about 1. 25 lbs. prepared taco-cheese meat [Cook 1. 25 lbs.
Ground beef and sewer.
Taco Season 1 pack.
You usually add water too.
Whatever the taco seasoning bag tells you to do, do it.
Mix 1/2 cups of shredded Mexican meat or cheddar cheese in the remaining seasoned meat. ]

Volcano eruption toothpaste Demo11.
Use a tube of toothpaste and a pin to show the \"volcano\" eruption, using the following script from this earth science unit.
The tube will be the crust and the toothpaste will be the molten magma under the crust.
Press on the tube and pierce it with a pin.
Magma is driven by strong heat and pressure.
If a crack or faulty line is found, it breaks out and releases the pressure. a.
If you have a space outside, shake a can or bottle of soda and open it.
If you don\'t have enough space to prove this, ask the kids, \"Did you shake a can or a bottle of soda and open it? What happened?
\"All the bubbles in soda push themselves and most of the liquid out of the top of the jar or bottle!
This is very similar to the role of volcanoes. b.
Volcanoes are mountains, but they are slightly different from mountains.
What are the similarities between them and the mountain?
What\'s the difference between them? c.
Show the kids your toothpaste.
Q: What happens when you squeeze the bottom of the toothpaste tube? (
Toothpaste comes out from the opening at the top. )
Prove this.
Q: What if you squeezed the tube but didn\'t remove the lid so the toothpaste has nowhere to go?
Will the pressure accumulate in the tube? (Yes)d.
This is what happened when the volcano erupted.
Magma is a mixture of gas and hot molten rock that gathers in a room deep in the Earth.
As more and more magma enters the chamber, the pressure is increasing.
Magma has a strong push on the surrounding rocks, and cracks occur where there are weaknesses.
Eventually, one of the cracks leads almost all the way to the surface.
The volcano is like a safety valve on Earth, releasing accumulated pressure from the depths of the Earth.
The weak points of the volcano on the surface of the Earth erupt, usually at the plate boundary. e.
Put your toothpaste tube (Hat open)
On the ground or on the table.
Tell the children to imagine that the tube is the surface of the Earth.
The toothpaste inside is hot, and the melted magma is underground.
Make a small hole near the bottom with a pin.
Ask the children what this hole might represent? (
Opening of volcano)
Press the tube near the lid.
Ask the children what this action might mean. (
Magma Under Pressure)What happens? (
Magma flows out of the volcano. )f.
When the magma rises through the pipeline and approaches the surface, the gas in the molten rock forms bubbles, just like the bubbles in the shaken soda tank.
The bubble pushes more hard on the hat (
Earth\'s shell)
Until it exploded, a hole was blown from the surface.
Hot steam, ash and gas burst, pushing large blocks of rock and huge lava (
Liquid magma reaching the surface;
Rock formed when liquid lava is hardened)into the air.
Then more lava spills over the top.
Teacher/Mother 1: you need: 1 tube of toothpaste and 1 type of involcanic outbreak.
Demonstrate the type of volcanic eruption in a large bowl with a full bottle of water:.
Not all volcanoes burst out with violent explosions.
There are four main types of volcanic eruptions: Hawaii volcano: gentle lava flows, continuous outflow [
Squeeze the bottle a little so that the water will flow out of the top. ]
Strombolin: Small explosion [
Squeeze the bottle a little gently. ]
Volcanic lava is thicker so trapped gas explodes to escape
Squeeze the bottle 3 times so a lot of water will flow out every time. ]Plinian (
Named after the boy who witnessed and recorded the eruption of Mount vesuwei)
The lava is thick, so the trapped gas can cause a huge explosion, and a large amount of ash is thrown into the air [
Buy a new bottle of water.
Squeeze it hard so a lot of water will flow out.
If needed, you can also throw away a handful of flour to represent a large amount of ash thrown away. ]b.
Most volcanoes do not erupt continuously. Geologists (
Scientists who study the forces that make up and shape the Earth)
Volcanoes, such as sleep, awakening, living and death, are often described in terms commonly reserved for living beings.
An active volcano or active volcano is a volcano that is erupting or has shown signs that it may erupt in the near future.
A dormant or sleeping volcano is like a sleeping bear.
Scientists expect a dormant volcano to wake up and become active in the future.
However, there may be thousands of years between volcanic eruptions.
A volcano that has been extinct or has died is unlikely to erupt again.
Teacher/Mother 2: you need: 2 water bottles (
Preferably made of fragile plastic)
A big bowl, a big towel, a flour (optional)
* If you would like to add a little bit of art to your course, look at the paintings (
Some modern, some classical)
Volcano: Saturday-volcano-art . Volcano Song13.
Sing the song of the volcano. (
If you want to print a worksheet showing the parts they can tag later, you can find one on http. a.
By using scripts from this earth science unit, quickly tell the children the steps of volcanic life: magma rises from below the Earth to the surface.
Due to the pressure from the heat, the magma rises to the pipeline.
Magma, hot air and gas erupt from the crust to form an area known as the crater and the top of the cone.
The magma outside the Earth is called lava.
It flows on land.
Lava cools and harden into lava.
One side of the volcano cracked.
The air and magma come out to form cracks.
Eventually, the lava outside the Earth and the lava inside the Earth hardened.
The volcano is extinct and no longer erupts. b.
What\'s singing in the volcano?
Tune: London Bridge (
The bill of marking. )
What\'s inside a volcano, volcano, volcano? (
Raise your arms like you are asking questions. )
What\'s in the volcano? Let\'s find out!
Magma, air and hot ash ,(
Move your fingers)
Lava, air and ash in the depths.
The pressure will make them up and up (
Finger swing up)
The pressure sends them up and up to the surface!
The pipe reaches the top ,(
Form a triangle on your head with your arms)
The catheter reaches the top to form a cone.
Lava is on land, on land, on land ,(
Start with your arm crossing your head and let your men down to your side as you swing your fingers. )
Lava flows from the cracks to the land.
It becomes a volcanic rock, a volcanic rock ,(Make a fist)
It becomes a magma rock made of lava.
The volcano is extinct ,(
Put your hands next to your face and pretend to sleep. )
The volcano is extinct, no longer erupting!
Teacher/Mom 4: you need: lyrics to this song for the kids to see (
Write/print with big letter or copy and distribute to each family)Volcanic Type 14.
Discuss different types of volcanoes and show pictures.
We used illustrations of Laura Damon\'s discovery of earthquakes and volcanoes, as well as real volcanic photos of dangerous volcanoes taken by Seymour Simon.
Let the kids play their games
When describing three main types using the following script from this earth science unit, doh and shape each type: a picture showing the slag cone (
Paricutin in Mexico).
Discuss their shape (
Quite small, steep sides, and a bowl. shaped crater).
The children are playing.
Into the coal cone volcano.
When they shape them, please mention how they form: if the lava is thick and hard, it may produce ash and coal slag that pile up around the volcanic opening, make it look like a huge cone or chocolate chip.
This is mentioned in the book \"Mountain of Fire.
\"The coal cone volcano is the most common type of volcano in North America. [
Let them repeat, the slag cone. âx80x9d]
Show a picture of a mammoth volcano (
Monaloa, Hawaii).
Discuss their shape (a wide, gentle-sloping cone)
Like vanilla wafer cookies.
The children are playing.
Enter a volcanic hill.
As they shape them, mention how they are formed: some volcanoes erupt with a huge explosion of dust and gas.
Instead, the lava will bubble, boil and spray to the surface, and then flow along the sides, like a thick pot of soup, which has been on the stove for too long.
These are called \"quiet volcanoes \"(
Although the eruption of their volcano may be quiet. )
Their lava flows form a gentle dome. shaped mounds.
Most of the major volcanoes in Hawaii, such as monaloa and Kilauea, are rocky volcanoes. [
Let them repeat, dome or shield volcano. âx80x9d]
Show pictures of a composite volcano or a same-layer volcano (
Mount Fuji and Mount San in Japan.
Clarence, Washington state).
Discuss their shape (
Very steep high cone shape-
Volcano)
How they are formed: volcanoes can erupt again and again.
After each eruption, the lava and ash around the opening cooled hard.
The volcano erupts on the first floor after the eruption.
Most of the world\'s tall cone-shaped volcanoes, such as Italy\'s vesuwei volcano and Japan\'s Fuzhou mountain, are so tall.
They have a huge good kiss shape.
The children are playing.
Enter a composite volcano/layered volcano. [
Let them repeat, compound the volcano or the same layer. âx80x9d]
Teacher/mom 1: you need: Pictures of Each volcano (from a book)and play-doh (from families)
* If you want to spend more time on the volcano type, you can find an interesting short play on the volcano type (
There are also a few better volcanic activities)at http: .
Ring of Fire erupting with baking soda/vinegar. (Do this outside)[
Preparation: when a teacher/mom uses toothpaste to demonstrate the eruption of the volcano, ask another teacher/mom to help you.
Go outside and put the bucket with the bottle in the Oval, or if you have a smaller group or sandbox, just put the bottle in a pile of sand in the Oval.
Leave a little space between each barrel/bottle.
Pour 1/4 cups of baking soda into each bottle with a funnel.
Pour about 3/4 cups of vinegar each.
Put a drop of red food in each cup.
Put a cup next to each barrel. Pre-
Fill each bottle with baking soda. Pre-
Fill the Cup with vinegar and a few drops of red food coloring. a.
Explain the fire ring with the script of this earth science unit: there are nearly 850 active volcanoes in the world.
There are at least 80 under the ocean.
When the edge of an ocean plate is pushed under another plate, the rock sinking into the crust melts and rises, bubbling up into the sea through the weakness of the other plate.
When the lava comes into contact with the water, it cools and hardens.
In some places, lava piles up so much that it sticks to the surface of the water.
This is the volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, such as how Japanese islands are formed. b.
If you mark all the volcanoes in the world on a map like the pictures in this book (
Dangerous Volcano in Seymour Simon)
You drew a line between them. the-
Click on the picture and you will see where the hardest plates on our planet are.
There are so many active volcanoes on the edge of the Pacific\'s five major plates that geologists call the fire ring area! âx80x9d (
Let the children repeat the ring of fire. âx80x9d)c.
We will make the rings of fire in the Pacific Ocean by making each volcano.
Tell the kids that there is baking soda in each bottle and vinegar and red food dye in each cup.
When baking soda is combined with vinegar, it produces a chemical reaction that forms a gas called carbon dioxide. d.
Let the Children Pour the vinegar into the bottle. e.
Tell children in wash your hands.
Teacher/Mother 4: you need: at least 5 cups of baking soda, 1/4 cups of measuring glass, liquid measuring cup, 17 cups of disposable, at least 13 cups of vinegar, sand bucket with bottle (
Brought by family)
* If you want additional activity ideas, video clips, etc.
On the volcano, check out the kids to investigate the volcano or www. spacegrant. hawaii. edu .
Snacks and reviews(
If you are not late on time)
Sing two songs from today: All 4 sections of \"Song of the volcano\" on how God binds the earth together. 15.
After the volcano comes out of the oven, spray the ketchup onto the edible volcano and sprinkle a little cheese on each volcano.
Let the children eat volcanoes and drink water.
Teacher/Mother 3: you need: 2 cups of Mexican shredded meat mixture or cheddar cheese, 1 small disposable cup for each child and 1 napkin for each child.
A 5-minute review of what we have learned: what events are causing the land to break down on Earth? (Noahâx80x99s flood)
What do we call these things? (
